REVIEW - Dark Inside - Jeyn Roberts

Hardcover, US, 336 pages

Since mankind began, civilizations have always fallen: the Romans, the Greeks, the Aztecs…Now it’s our turn. Huge earthquakes rock the world. Cities are destroyed. But something even more awful is happening. An ancient evil has been unleashed, turning everday people into hunters, killers, crazies.

Mason's mother is dying after a terrible car accident. As he endures a last vigil at her hospital bed, his school is bombed and razed to the ground, and everyone he knows is killed.

Aries survives an earthquake aftershock on a bus, and thinks the worst is over when a mysterious stranger pulls her out of the wreckage, but she’s about to discover a world changed forever.

Clementine, the only survivor of an emergency town hall meeting that descends into murderous chaos, is on the run from savage strangers who used to be her friends and neighbors.

And Michael witnesses a brutal road rage incident that is made much worse by the arrival of the police--who gun down the guilty party and then turn on the bystanding crowd.

Where do you go for justice when even the lawmakers have turned bad? These four teens are on the same road in a world gone mad. Struggling to survive, clinging on to love and meaning wherever it can be found, this is a journey into the heart of darkness – but also a journey to find each other and a place of safety.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked this book up, but guess what?

4/5 Stars!

I LOVED it. I’m a huge (HUGE!) fan of apocalyptic fiction (and movies) and my favourite bit is always watching society fall apart (I know…I have problems…but in the event of the zombie apocalypse, you’ll be glad I did all this studying), and that’s exactly where Dark Inside picks up.

The book follows the lives of four teens (Mason, Michael, Clementine and Aries) on the day the world ends…and the days that follow.

The story starts off with a bang. Mason has just been pulled from school and driven to the hospital with the news that his mom has been in a car accident, and while he’s there waiting to see if she’s going to make it or not, a story comes on the news. A group of people went into his school and bombed it. Everyone he knows has been killed. Suddenly, all over the world, the earth shakes and splits apart, buildings tumbling and people dying in the earthquakes, and even worse than that, people start going crazy.

Violently crazy.

Michael watches as a man runs a motorcyclist down with his car for no reason, watches as the people who should be helping turn on each other instead.

Clementine sits in a town meeting that is suddenly taken over by raging gunmen.

Aries finds herself on a bus in the middle of the earthquake, watching the people around her die.

This book was terrifying and exhilarating. I loved reading of how the four teens adapted and struggled to survive in (and try to make sense of) a world that was falling apart around them. My only trouble was trying to keep track of all the characters, as the book switched points of view with each chapter, and I was sometimes stuck going “wait…what were you doing again?”. But all in all? Loved it.

If you like apocalyptic tales, you will enjoy this book.

Great read!
