The Lying Game - Sara Shepard

The Lying Game (The Lying Game, #1)

I had a life anyone would kill for.
Then someone did.

The worst part of being dead is that there’s nothing left to live for. No more kisses. No more secrets. No more gossip. It’s enough to kill a girl all over again. But I’m about to get something no one else does—an encore performance, thanks to Emma, the long-lost twin sister I never even got to meet.
Now Emma’s desperate to know what happened to me. And the only way to figure it out is to be me—to slip into my old life and piece it all together. But can she laugh at inside jokes with my best friends? Convince my boyfriend she’s the girl he fell in love with? Pretend to be a happy, carefree daughter when she hugs my parents good night? And can she keep up the charade, even after she realizes my murderer is watching her every move?
From Sara Shepard, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Pretty Little Liars books, comes a riveting new series about secrets, lies, and killer consequences.
Let the lying game begin.

Why have I never read any of Sara Shepard's books until now?  Can someone tell me.  Clearly waiting this long was a grievous error on my part.

The Lying Game is amazing.  When I first picked it up, I thought for sure it would be a paranormal, since one of the main characters is already dead, but this book is so much more than that.  Yes, one of the characters is dead, and has a very real voice in this novel, but it's much more in the style of Lovely Bones than anything else.  The story revolves around Emma, a teenage girl who was abandoned as a child, who learns that she has a long-lost twin sister just as she's being kicked out of her foster home for a crime she didn't commit.

She goes looking for her sister immediately.  There's only one problem...it appears that her sister is dead...and now everyone has mistaken Emma for a dead girl.

Emma is caught up in living her sister's glamorous life, all the while trying to figure out what happened to her.  During all this, you get a glimpse through the ghost's eyes as she watches Emma and tries to remember what happened.  But this really didn't feel paranormal to me, since there was no interaction between Emma and the ghost.  The ghost can do nothing but watch.

It absolutely loved this one.  Just to warn you, it's the beginning of a new series (Book 2 is out in April, I think!), so don't expect everything to be resolved right away.

Great mystery.  Great juxtaposition between Emma's upbringing and that of her twin sister's.

Great read all together!

5stars!

And...that brings us to my first new read and review of 2011!  1 down, 99 to go!

  1. I have had this book since it came out and I still have yet to read it. I keep hearing great things about her books, but this is the first one I ever picked up. I got her first adult novel, Everything We Ever Wanted from netgalley. I am excited to read that one as well.

    Great review!
